We are very glad that we are listed in a top that honors successful companies from all over central Europe. However, to be honest from the very beginning, we do not know for sure what success really is or if there is a secret formula of achieving it. There are so many quotes and sayings that try to describe success with simple words or sophisticated idioms. However, we believe that one anecdote describes best the attempt of defying the coveted “success”.
There were these two young fish swimming along, and they happen to meet an older fish swimming the other way, who nods at them and says, “Morning, boys, how’s the water?” And the two young fish swim on for a bit, and then eventually one of them looks over at the other and goes, “What the hell is water?”
Seeing our name in the Deloitte Top 50 Fastest Growing Companies is an occasion of joy but also of reflection. We can’t help wondering what has brought us here? How can we be better? What lesson should we learn from this? And as we tried answering to all of these questions, we’ve realized that they all have a common ground: YOU, our reader, our client, our contributor. That’s right; our beloved cognitives who driven us to transcend our capabilities, to improve ourselves and who made us want to live up to high expectations.
Therefore this recognition also goes to you.
Back in 2010, cognitiveSEO started from the passion for SEO and digital marketing and the desire to find a cost-efficient solution that could meet all the professional requirements of a digital marketer. It hasn’t been an easy ride. Try the road less traveled, you often hear being said. And that road will lead you to success. We won’t say that the road to choose isn’t important, yet, the people with whom you travel are equally important. There is metaphor I particularly like, best described in a very interesting management book.
When going on the road, you first need to get the right people on the bus, the wrong people off the bus, and the right people in the right seats. After that you need to figure where to drive the bus. Once on the bus, the right people together would work out how to take it someplace great.
While thinking of what brought us here, we realize that we cannot pinpoint a single key event that exemplified our “successful” story. It wasn’t a “boom” moment, a time when everything start working great due to a specific decision that we took. For a better understanding, indulge me to exemplify this with another metaphor, best illustrated by James C. Collins:
Picture an egg. Day after day, it sits there. No one pays attention to it. No one notices it. Certainly no one takes a picture of it or puts it on the cover of a celebrity-focused business magazine. Then one day, the shell cracks and out jumps a chicken.
All of a sudden, the major magazines and newspapers jump on the story: “Stunning Turnaround at Egg!” and “The Chick Who Led the Breakthrough at Egg!” From the outside, the story always reads like an overnight sensation—as if the egg had suddenly and radically altered itself into a chicken.
Now picture the egg from the chicken’s point of view.
While the outside world was ignoring this seemingly dormant egg, the chicken within was evolving, growing, developing—changing. From the chicken’s point of view, the moment of breakthrough, of cracking the egg, was simply one more step in a long chain of steps that had led to that moment. Granted, it was a big step—but it was hardly the radical transformation that it looked like from the outside.
We cannot put our finger on one event, action or feature that we’ve developed. What we know for sure is that we’ve treated each feature, each update, each client and decision with maximum seriousness and attention.
Therefore, what leads one to success?
Having the right people on board? Always learning from your clients? Seeing everything in perspective? Being listed in the Deloitte Top 50 Fastest Growing Companies?
We don’t know for sure; but we do know that in the pursuit of achieving success we put together all our hard work and passion. And this is what drives who we are and what we do. Everyday.
